Archaeologists searching for a lost Temple of Apollo dating to approximately 600 BC may have found it buried in the earth on a tiny island off the coast near Sozopol in Bulgaria.
The temple was documented and the location was supposed to have been a temenos – an area of land cut off and used for a sole purpose – and was also the home of a 13-metre high bronze statue of Apollo until the Romans sacked the temple in 72 BC and carted the statue off to Rome.
Finds unearthed in the area clearly show Apollo worship and thus the temple is likely to have been located somewhere in the near vicinity.
